Civil Liability
TL;DR
Civil liability is the legal obligation to compensate a third party for harm one causes. Liability insurance transfers the financial consequences of that obligation to the insurer, within the limits of the policy.
Details
Most mandatory or near-mandatory covers are liability covers: motor third-party liability (Auto) and private/family liability (Vie privée). Liability insurance pays the third party, not the policyholder, and typically excludes intentional acts.
