A deductible (or excess) is the portion of a loss the policyholder bears before the insurer pays. It can be a fixed amount, a percentage, or a combination.

Details

Deductibles align incentives and reduce small claims; a higher deductible usually lowers the premium. The Belgian term is Franchise.
